The College Football Playoff is gearing up for its first championship game after a once-controversial 12-team playoff.

For the first time, college football allowed the top 12 ranked teams in the country to compete for the national championship. The top two teams this year were awarded a bye, while the remaining 10 have been dueling for the last month.

From 2014 through 2023 the College Football Playoff was only limited to the top 4 teams.

Here’s everything you need to know about the big game between the Ohio State Buckeyes and Notre Dame.

When & Where Is The National Championship?

The national championship game will feature No. 7 Notre Dame (14-1) vs No. 8 Ohio State (13-2).

It will be played on January 20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

How Did We Get Here?

Ohio State won its first two playoff games in blowout fashion. The Buckeyes knocked off Tennessee in the opening round, dominating at home 42-17. They then won their second straight, whooping the Oregon Ducks to the tune of 41-21.

Ohio State’s third game against Texas was more of a nailbiter, with the Buckeyes pulling away in the final moments after a scoop and score by Jack Sawyer.

Notre Dame’s wins were impressive as well, though slightly less dominant. ND beat Indiana in the first round 27-17, then knocked off Georgia 23-10. It’s worth noting that ND’s game against Georgia deserves an asterisk considering the Bulldogs weren’t playing their starting quarterback, Carson Beck, due to injury.

ND’s third game against Penn State was much closer, with the Fighting Irish winning 27-24.

What’s The Betting Line?

The Buckeyes are heavy favorites. On FanDuel right now Ohio State is -8.5 on the spread and -365 on the ML. The point total is set at 45.5.

Will the Buckeyes get another big win and save Ryan Day from the embarrassment of losing to Michigan again?

Or will Notre Dame shock the world and continue their impressive run under head coach Marcus Freeman?
