The Cleveland Browns announced that quarterback Deshaun Watson tore his right Achilles for the second time. He had surgery on Thursday.
In a statement released by the Browns, the team said Watson’s “recovery time and return to play status is uncertain, and he will likely miss significant time during the 2025 season.”
A typical timetable for recovery following this type of surgery is usually around seven months.
In his exit interview to conclude the 2024 season, Watson complained of discomfort in his ankle. An MRI confirmed a “re-rupture to his Achilles tendon”.

From ESPN:
The 29-year-old Watson initially tore his Achilles Oct. 20, marking the second straight year his season ended because of injury. He also missed the final eight games of the 2023 season after undergoing surgery to his throwing shoulder.
This news comes as a blow to a Browns organization looking to finally steady the quarterback position. Since 1999, the Browns have had 40 different QBs start a game – by far the most in the NFL. In the last two years alone Cleveland has used nine different quarterbacks.
The only good news for Cleveland, if you want to call it that, is that they have the No. 2 overall pick in April’s NFL Draft.
As for Watson, he still has two years left on his Cleveland contract. He has a $72.9 million cap hit for each of the next two seasons.
The only quarterbacks currently on the Browns roster are Watson and Dorian Thomposon-Robinson.
