A national marijuana sales analyst is crowning Ohio’s rollout for adult-use recreational marijuana as one of the best in the country.
Ben Burstein, the analyst who works for LeafLink, said in a statement, “It has been one of the most successful launches in U.S. history.”
Since recreational marijuana became legal in Ohio in August 2024, the state’s sales have exceeded $242 million.
The leading cause of the smooth and lucrative rollout is said to be Ohio’s decision to allow medical facilities to sell dual-use cannabis from the beginning. This decision paved the way for a seamless start to adult marijuana sales in the Buckeye state.
However, not all aspects of the new Ohio regulations for cannabis are set in stone.
From FOX 8:
While sales figures soar, Ohio lawmakers are debating the future of the industry, with critical issues on the table. The Senate is considering measures to restrict home-grow rights and ban most vape products, while the House focuses on clarifying regulations and revising tax revenue collection methods.
There’s also an issue of acceptance. More than 120 different Ohio cities and towns have banned recreational sales of marijuana. But Burstein believes, based on data from other states, that those bans could be temporary.
“What we’ve seen from other states with municipal bans is that, over time, cities want the tax revenue that comes with the market,” said Burstein.
Ohio is currently on pace to record between $800-$900 million in its first year of annual sales.
