Four students at San Diego State University have been charged following an incident involving a fraternity pledge being set on fire.

A young man suffered third-degree burns after attempting to perform a “skit” at a party.

The fraternity is Phi Kappa Psi and the incident allegedly occurred last February. To make matters worse, the fraternity was already on probation with the school when this most recent incident occurred.

Three of the students, Lucas Cowling, Christopher Serrano, and Lars Larsen, pre-planned the fire skit for a party at the fraternity house. Serrano ultimately set Larsen on fire during the event. Both Serrano and Larsen were 20 years old at the time, and they were both pledges when the incident occurred.

Larsen suffered burns on roughly 16% of his body. He spent weeks in the hospital during recovery.

Caden Cooper, 22, is the fourth fraternity member being charged. All four are accused of impeding law enforcement’s investigation into the fire. They are also believed to have deleted evidence and told other fraternity members not to engage with the officers investigating what happened.

An anonymous caller tipped the university off to the incident. SDSU in turn notified the campus police.

From FOX 8:

All four students are each facing at least one felony charge in relation to the incident and purported cover-up, including recklessly causing a fire with great bodily injury, conspiracy to commit an act injurious to the public and violating the social host ordinance.

Each student has pleaded not guilty and the next hearing is scheduled in the spring.
